Weekly Update #1: Why are we being forced to do this?

Being a student of CEB has been an incredible experience for me. It has made grow as a better sudent and person, make me realize who my real friends are, and introduced me to a lot of new experiences. One of which I am now very familiarized with: SMRT.
In first semester I started in level 125, with an awesome teacher and a fun class. I am sure it was and still is the best of all the other levels. As I advanced on this platform, I was asked to do different activities in order for me to practice my english and be better at it.
However, I had no clue of the storm that was coming. I am now in 140 and the activities I have to make are a nightmare. I am now being forced against my will to update weekly about what we see in class, and they especifically ask you to make it boring, so here I am.
Now that I wasted your time with this unnecessary introduction, let's start with the sad part:

What I learned last week (and Monday of this week) in SMRT 140

We've seen a lot of skills since we've been in 125; however, in 140 we are now focusing on a more college level English, since they are helping us to prepare ourselves for that academic level.
Last week we practiced the skills of:
  • Reading
  • Listening
  • (and the worst) Writing 馃槚馃槚馃槚馃槚馃槚馃槚馃槚馃槚
In all of them we've practised the basics:
  • Reading: identfying the main ideas and important details.
  • Listening: paying attention, taking notes and identifying important information.
  • Writing: learning to write something correctly because let's be real, we don't write good.
However, there has been an exhaustive reitaration in two aspects:
  1. General Statement
  2. Thesis Statement
I've been having nightmares about both of them, so let me explain to you what are they.

According to the paper Miss Karitza gave me,  "a general statement is a broad introduction to the paper's topic." And also "a thesis statement offers a concise summary of the main point or claim..." of whatever you are writing.
So we've been mainly focusing on identifyng these two when we read and listen to something, and also we are learning how to write them correctly.

I've decided that each week I am going to choose a vocabulary word that stuck to me all week.
Last's week vocabulary word is : (drumroll)

HOLISTIC

Thank you for reading until here, you can now have a cute pic of a mini donkey. Enjoy 馃槉

Longevity

INTRODUCTION
Could you imagine living only up to 30 years? That’s crazy, right? People used to live way less than what we live now, and that’s because life back then was very different from ours. Not only am I referring to the internet because you know it changed the game forever, but also to important things that have huge impact in how long our lives are going to be. We now live longer because there has been a lot of improvement in sanitation, healthcare and nutrition over the years; but is it good to live that much?

BODY
Let’s first start with sanitation. Back then, they didn’t dispose their waste correctly. They would just throw all their pee, feces and disgusting substances to the streets and wait for the rain to wash it away. Therefore, they had a lot of diseases spreading through the cities. This changed when sewage was invented, so the wastes could go to a special place, and not get people sick.
People also ate whatever they wanted, not carrying about their nutritional value, not like today. Nowadays we take a lot of importance to what we feed our bodies with. We make sure that we consume the nutrients that we need, and take supplements when we are lacking something. Agriculture also helped a lot, since the food that is being produced is of better quality and healthier.
The last thing, is that we have great healthcare thanks to the new technology people have developed. In the past, if you got sick well I’m sorry for you but you were practically dead. Now medicine has advanced a lot, and even very complex diseases can now be treated and cured.
All of these, has helped us to live more years, especially if you come from a developed city. Nevertheless, they are also some problems in living a lot. People that are older, can still work, so they take the jobs for the younger generations that need those occupations. This can affect also in retirees, since older people need financial help to keep healthy, younger generations will probably not be able to obtain monetary aid when they retire.

CONCLUSION

It is important to have a balance between how much are we living and how will we be able to sustain all the people in the world, since there are a lot humans being born, and less dying. However, we must realize that thanks to the evolution of technology, our life quality is better and we can enjoy the gift of life longer. And you, how much do you want to live?
